I will always respect how they didn't sugar coat anything in this song, they called everything exactly what it was and didn't hide it with flowery language.
I just love that the actor playing "Dead Earl" is dancing enthusiastically with everyone else at the end, in his "Dead, Decomposing Earl" makeup and costume! Somehow it makes the solidarity of all the artists involved with this Chicks hit even more heartening.
I delicate this song to every abusive person out there. Watch your back. Some people fight back, and karma is real.
I remember my mom playing this song when I was kid and we'd just look at eachother with unspoken hate for our situation. We didn't do it but he did pass away in a very fitting way in the end.
“Right away Marianne flew in from Atlanta on a red eye midnight flight...” I have heard this song hundreds of times for close to 2 decades and that line still brings me to tears. Every time.
"Right away Maryanne flew up from Atlanta on a red eye midnight flight" is the line that brings me back. So many victims of abuse don't have a Maryanne, which makes the emotion conveyed here so much more poignant to me.
Maybe if more abusers met this fate, less abuse would happen. Way to go, Chicks! Love this tune.
I know this is supposed to be a lighthearted look at a serious subject, but I still cry at the imagery of "Earl walked right through that restraining order and put her in intensive care." Every damn time.
My deepest condolences to Laura Lynch's family and friends. Such a terrible time to suffer such a tragedy. Your music and strength will live on forever. RIP
"And it turns out he was a missing person who nobody missed at all" My favorite line of this song
All the Earls of this planet deserve this.
I'm a domestic violence survivor so I truly APPRECIATE someone speaking up for all us!!!
This got me through this situation 3 years ago on April 12th as I am a domestic violence survivor
This song has completely blown up on TikTok. Glad to see a new generation appreciate what an absolute fucking masterpiece this song is.
You got tht right ❤
I remember when this came out and there was so much backlash to the idea a woman/anyone would kill an abusive partner, and I was floored. No lets not worry about the person sent to the hospital... "Turns out he was a missing person who nobody missed at all"
can we all just admit this is the most beautiful song about murder ever.
the chicks bury him in a chorus of harmony and sass.
"He was a missing person who nobody missed at all." Best line, my favorite since I heard it listening to the Fly album way back when.
