I define a deadly fallacy as a group of fallacies united by the fact that they are both exceptionally difficult to recognize to the point that the individual is unaware of its influence, while simultaneously having a profound effect on distorting the perception and decision making processes of the individual.
The Strawman Fallacy is when someone misrepresents your stance to make it easier to attack. Ins tead of engaging with the real argument, they create a ‘straw man’ version to knock down. Watch out for this common debate tactic!
The Fallacy of fear (aka appeal to fear) is when someone uses scare tactics instead of solid reasoning to persuade you. Instead of logical arguments, it relies on threats or dire consequences to push you towards a particular choice.
And the God in the Gaps Fallacy is when someone exploits the gap in our understanding, filling it with whatever is convenient to their argument. This is effective because since this gap is the part we don’t understand, this exploits our inability to critique what they’ve filled the gap with. Tricky tricky.
