The Rape of Nanking & Japanese Atrocities #ww2

The Japanese would not just look for resources, they would embark on a campaign of absolute destruction, committing some of the most horrific and brutal acts in the history of warfare. As one historian put it, Japanese troops “let loose like the hordes of Genghis Khan,” with the most well-documented case being known as the “Rape of Nanking”.

Further expanding into China, Japan would take Shanghai in November 1937, with them then marching west toward Nanking. By December, 50,000 Japanese troops had reached the city, who would participate in the destruction, widespread slaughter, rape and murder of innocent civilians. 300,000 lives, half of the city's population, would be taken in less than 6 weeks, most being buried in mass graves with their hands tied behind their backs.
